PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

square dance callers lrgerThis course is an intensive hands-on workshop for beginner-intermediate callers who want to start calling squares, or who have been calling contras and want to add squares to their repertoire. We will focus on teaching skills, calling with the phrase and the beat, improvising and connecting to the music. We will explore various traditions and styles of squares as we develop repertoire for different situations.

This program, held concurrently with Adult & Family Week at Timber Ridge, is designed and led by Kathy Anderson, who has been calling squares for many years, and enjoys passing this skill on. She has led many callers' workshops, and encourages as much participation as possible calling different types of squares in a supportive group atmosphere. We will meet for 2 one-hour sessions each day, so preparation for class will maximize our time together. At the daily Square Callers Course Dance Party, Course participants will call dances with live music and will receive structured positive feedback. The dance party will be open to all dancers at this week, and will be an important part of the overall learning experience.

Registrants will receive links to materials for discussion and some dances of different styles. If you have your own materials and dances, you are encouraged to bring them.

REGISTRATION

Participation is limited to sixteen students, and before camp each student is asked to complete a preparatory assignment, which will be explained with acceptance. If the class is oversubscribed on March 14, preference will be given to the best qualified applicants and to applicants supported by their local community. Strong indicators for CDSS are our Group Priority and Matching Scholarship processes, where a CDSS affiliate vouches for a participant and may offer some scholarship, asking CDSS to match that amount (www.cdss.org/support-services/insurance-group-services/priority-matching-scholarships). This is a statement by people who know the individual, that the person is deserving of assistance and would benefit the local community by attending camp. That can count highly in this and in our scholarship considerations.

REQUIREMENTS

This course is designed for beginner and intermediate level callers. No square calling experience is required, but attending dances where squares are danced is a good idea, as well as familiarity with old time music. You are welcome to bring dances you know, but are encouraged to try new dances to build repertoire. You will be asked to provide a short summary of your calling experience, your interest in squares, and what you hope to get out of the class. You are encouraged to give and receive feedback during the course.
