For a long time, Kate lived in my consciousness only as a color: The common question that evoked her name was, is it in Blue Barnes or do we have to bring the sheet music?

And then, in 2002, when the new edition (with a new color for the cover!) was in the works, by some miracle of serendipity, Kate asked me to help with the index. As I recently posted to the ECD List on SharedWeight.net, referring to the errors I had made and the challenges of tracking down all the information in the Dance Leaders' index, “Despite all these problems, I have a very good feeling about the Index, knowing that it's been a help to many. And collaborating with Kate, who graciously signed my copy of Red Barnes with thanks, was a satisfying and affirming experience.”

Indeed, affirmation is a word that will always be associated with Kate—affirmation of life, of her music, of her friends.
